The "Brindabella Heroes" Hall of Fame - Winter 2002

Congratulations to our Swimmers of the Season for Winter 2002 - Sam Lewis takes out the John Walker Trophy for the boys, whilst Jasmine McMillan-Smith wins the White Family Trophy for the girls.  Both swimmers, two of the Club's "quiet achievers", can be justly proud of their efforts this season.
Brindabella Swimmers have had a sensational season in the pool, but what's been really special is the achievements in other sports.  Congratulations to the following swimers who have represented NSW or the ACT in another sport this winter:
  • Timothy Cameron placed 14th overall in the 11 years division at the National Schools Cross Country Championships AND has also made the ACT Team for the Athletics event in December.
  • Mitchell Jones shows his prowess as a sprinter by making the NSW team for the Australian Schools Athletics Championships at the end of October.  Mitchell will be racing in the 13 years 100m event.
  • Bethany Miles also qualified in the ACT Team for the Cross Country (in her very first Cross Country competition!).  Unfortunately a broken foot kept her out of the event, but we're sure she'll be back next year!  Bethany has also been selected in the all-conquering Tuggeranong district netball team for the third successive year.
  • James Thorp will be lining up in the ACT Touch Football team for the National Schools Championships in late October.
Eighteen Brindabella swimmers qualified for NSW Winter State Age - a great result for the Club - congratulations to all swimmers.

The 2002 Swimathon was held on 30 August.  A total of 31 swimmers participated, swimming an amazing 110.2km between them!  Thomas Hamers-Smith, Krysten Mansell and Lainee Sutton were locked in a three-way tie for overall honours, with each swimming 190 laps.  A special mention, too, to Ashleigh Mansell and Isaac Mestrom-Jones, both eight years old, who swam 76 and 80 laps respectively.  The list of Age Group winners is shown below:

More hot news just in on our Australian representative!!  Katrina Lewis has just been named in the Australian team to compete in the IPC World Championships in Argentina in December.  At her first meet back from the major illness that kept her out of the Commonwealth Games recently, Katrina broke two S10 14 years Australian records, so we know she's getting back to her best.
In July Australian Swimming announced the 2002/03 Telstra Dolphins National Squad and guess what??  The squad includes our very own Katrina Lewis.  Congratulations on an awesome year Katrina.

Whilst the rest of the Brindabella Squad was on fire at the AIS, Bethany Miles finished 14th in the OPEN Womens 5km division at the Terry Fox Fun Run - her first ever competitive run.  Not a bad result in a race with several hundred competitors!!
The Club's major swimmer awards, the "Swimmer of the Season" trophies, have been awarded to Timothy Cameron and Lainee Sutton for the Summer 2001/02 season.  Congratulations to both swimmers on their richly deserved success.
