General Resources

The easiest and most convenient sources of various software are magazine cover CD's that contain more data than you could download in a month of Sundays! You can purchase the magazines from newsagents, choosing the one that contains web editing software. Here are some links to on line sites, showing what's currently on offer in the mags, and will help you to make your choice of purchase when you get to the newsagent.

Web editing programs

You're going to need a program that will help you to create a homepage. We've listed a few freebies for your convenience. Some are time limited trials, where you purchase the program if you're happy with it and want to continue using it after the trial period elapses, while others are totally free.

These programs are often referred to as WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get and it's pronounced 'Y Zee Wig). They enable you to avoid the messy html code behind a web page,  dealing with the visual interface only, and allowing you to see what the end result will be as you design your web page.

Microsoft Internet Explorer 4 came with a 'light' version of their popular FrontPage program called 'FrontPage Express'. If you have IE 4 on disk, then just look for the 'fpxpress.exe' program install, located in one of the IE installation cabs, or download the 1.73 Mb file from here. If you like the program, then consider purchasing the full version of FrontPage and you can create a site just like our club one.

FPCreated.gif (9866 bytes) FrontPage (the full program) is no longer available as a trial download from the Microsoft web site. For the latest items available we suggest you search their site from this link: http://www.microsoft.com/frontpage

Anyone using Windows will already have the popular Paintbrush program installed on their PC. To access it you go to the 'Start' button, choose 'Programs', then up to 'Accessories' and you should see it listed as either 'Paintbrush' or 'Paint'. While it may have some limitations, it's free and convenient for most peoples needs.

Paint Shop Pro is a very good program and far more capable of doing a wide range of imaging tasks. Check out Ron's tutorial on this wonderful program and use it to enhance your web pages, remembering your imagination is the only limit to creativity.

Animated GIF's

Animated GIF's are another method of getting your page on the move. The welcome sign at top of this page is an example of one such animation. Many are available on the net and will save you the trouble of creating your own (just make sure you choose those that are free of copyright). Use our handy search and type in animated gifs free copyright as your search criteria. This should yield enough results to keep you busy for a long time. If you know what type of theme you want such as animals or faces etc, then add those words to your search criteria.

Macromedia Logo Macromedia Flash will help you to make your own splashy animations. Flash is one of the most popular programs available and does far more than just animate a picture. You can create an entire movie scene including fly in text etc. There's a cheaper alternative to Flash and it's called 'Swish'.

SWiSH - Create Flash animaton the easy way Swish will do for most of your animation needs and is a much more affordable option than Flash. It has 2 levels with 'Swish Lite' being the cheapest, Swish 2 the current version, and both are available as a trial download with loads of resources available at the site.
